Pet Therapy Program

Due to the gentle nature of the greyhound, nursing home visits have proven to be therapeutic for residents and adopters. The Personalized Greyhounds Pet Therapy Program visits area nursing homes about twice a month. Saturdays work well, however, weeknights are scheduled occasionally depending on the needs of the nursing homes.

General Guidelines

  • The number of greyhounds taken should be proportionate to the size of the space available. Too many greyhounds can become uncontrollable and might be frightening to some residents.
  • Greyhounds should be kept leashed to maintain control and avoid contact with residents that are uncomfortable with dogs.
  • Not all greyhounds are suited for this. Be sure all involved are comfortable with this type of attention.

Hints

  • We take a Polaroid camera occasionally, to take and leave pictures of the residents and the greyhounds together. This is really appreciated by the residents and staff.
  • Treats are good to have along so residents can be actively involved.
